Pedestal Paving Systems: Why They’re Gaining Ground in External Installations

In Episode 15 of the ARDEX Answers Podcast, Monique Fenech and Technical Services Advisor James Bradford take a closer look at pedestal systems—an increasingly popular method for external tiling on rooftops, balconies, and podiums.

What is a Pedestal System?

A pedestal system supports tiles or pavers on adjustable feet, raising them above the substrate. This creates a cavity underneath for drainage and services, while keeping the tiled surface level. It’s especially useful in commercial and high-end residential applications where both function and form matter.

Why Use a Pedestal System?

James highlights the main benefits:

  • Superior drainage – Water flows underneath rather than pooling on top.

  • Easy access to services – Plumbing and electrical conduits can be routed under the surface.

  • Flexible installation – Heights and falls can be adjusted easily with pedestal height settings.

  • Lightweight system – Compared to screeded or glued systems, pedestals reduce the overall weight on structures.

Common Applications

  • Rooftop terraces

  • Balconies

  • Pool surrounds

  • Plaza decks and podiums

Do Pedestals Need Adhesives or Mortar?

Nope. One of the key advantages is that pedestals don’t require adhesives, grouts, or mortars. This makes them easy to remove or reconfigure without damaging the substrate or tiles.

What Kind of Pavers Work Best?

Porcelain pavers are ideal, especially 20mm thick outdoor-grade tiles. They provide the strength needed to span the gaps between pedestals without breaking or flexing.

Things to Consider

  • Ensure the substrate is waterproofed and properly sloped.

  • Edge restraint systems are often needed to prevent movement.

  • Wind uplift in exposed areas can be a factor—talk to the supplier about compliant systems.

Final Thoughts

Pedestal systems provide versatility, drainage performance, and aesthetic advantages. But like all tiling methods, they require planning and product compatibility. Reach out to ARDEX if you’re considering one for your next project.
