Epoxy vs Cement Grout: What’s Best for Your Tiling Project?

Epoxy vs Cement Grout: What’s Best for Your Tiling Project?

In Episode 13 of the ARDEX Answers Podcast, Monique Fenech and James Bradford explore the age-old question faced by tilers and builders: should you choose epoxy grout or cement-based grout? Each has its pros, cons, and best-use scenarios—and understanding them can make all the difference on site.

Cement Grout: Tried and True

Cement-based grout is the traditional option. It’s easy to mix, cost-effective, and comes in a wide range of colours. For most standard applications, especially domestic tiling where aggressive cleaning isn’t required, it’s a solid choice.

But There’s a Catch…

Cement grout is porous. That means it can absorb water, stains, and even mould if not sealed properly. Over time, this can lead to discolouration or degradation, especially in wet or high-traffic areas.

Epoxy Grout: Durable and Stain-Resistant

Epoxy grout is made from resin and hardener, making it incredibly durable, stain-resistant, and waterproof. It’s perfect for:

  • Commercial kitchens

  • Bathrooms and showers

  • Swimming pools

  • Areas exposed to chemicals or high foot traffic

Downsides of Epoxy?

While it’s a high-performance solution, epoxy grout is more expensive, trickier to apply, and less forgiving for inexperienced tilers. It sets quickly, requires careful mixing, and can leave a residue (film) if not cleaned up promptly during application.

Key Tips from James

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely.

  • If you’re new to epoxy, trial a small area first.

  • Use ARDEX WA for excellent workability and ease of cleaning during installation.

  • Epoxy grout is also colour-fast—what you mix is what you get, no surprises.

Final Thoughts

Epoxy grout is ideal when long-term durability, hygiene, and chemical resistance matter. But for standard home applications, cement grout can still be a great fit—just make sure it’s sealed and well-maintained.
